Castleton

Welcome to Castleton Class

We are Early Years Foundation Stage 2 (EYFS2), also referred to as Reception year group.

All of the classes in school have been given names, using letters of the alphabet.  It has been decided to use local place names.  The 2 Reception classes will be A & C.  We are C, so our name is.... Castleton

The other class in Reception is Ashbourne.

If you need to contact our school this school year, you can use this name as well as ours

(Mrs Smith/Mrs Badhan), to identify the class your child is in.

  My name is Mrs Smith.

I am an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) class teacher. I have worked at St John's since September 2016, as class teacher and as a member of the school's leadership team. I lead EYFS and whole school curriculum. I am currently going through chemotherapy treatement so am not at work. I am looking forward to coming back to St John's and getting to know all the children in my class, as soon as the doctors allow me to return. Until then, Mrs Badhan will be teaching our class. She has been working with the children in Reception at St John's since January 2020.  Read on to find out a little bit more about both of us. I will be working closely with Mrs Badhan to ensure a smooth transition. If you have any questions or queries please message me through the contacts form at the bottom of this page.

A little bit about myself...

I have two of my own children, my daughter has just left St John's and is starting Belper High this September, and my son is in Year 5 at St John's. We visit my family in Guernsey every year, so my class always get to hear lots of interesting facts about the Channel Islands. I love animals, I have two cats, 3 guinea-pigs and an African land snail called Luna (who comes to visit us at school regularly). I always get very excited at Easter time when our school PTFA fund a living eggs experience for all our EYFS children, where the children get to watch eggs hatch into chicks!

My name is Mrs Badhan.

I am an Early Years Foundation Stage class teacher having qualified in 2005. Prior to that, I worked for a number of years supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in mainstream education including bilingual work with EAL children. I also have experience teaching children in Key Stage 1, (Years 1 and 2). I am passionate about my work and love teaching in Early Years. I started supply teaching last year and have worked at St John's since January 2020 in the new Foundation block. The indoor and outdoor environment is fantastic for children to have fun, learn and thrive! I am really excited and looking forward to September and to meeting all the children in Castleton class as their supply teacher. I am also looking forward to working with the EYFS team to ensure a smooth transition for all. If you have any questions or queries please message me through the contacts form at the bottom of this page.

A little bit about myself...

I have lived in Derby for most of my life and we have three grown up children and two young grandchildren; Aasha and Elijah, who are delightful and very active! Elijah lives in America so we visit whenever we can. In my spare time I love to cook, listen to music, go on long walks and watch a good TV drama!

Throughout Early Years we have lots of exciting experiences for the children, covering all the different areas of learning. Here are just a few photos of what we get up to, feel free to explore the archived Reception class page to see more photos.

Experiences in Reception year at St John's:

The children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, so we are constantly giving the children opportunities to explore and learn through play, indoors and outdoors.

Some of the other special events that take place during the first year at school are:

*The children perform a Nativity play for parents at Christmas time

*PTFA fund a treat at Christmas, we have had theatre visitors

performing for us and magic trick performances in the past

*PTFA fund our Living Eggs experience at Easter time

*In the past we have had White Post Farm road show visit us at St John's

with a variety of animals for the children to hold, touch and observe for the day

*Scooter/ balance bike experience session

*Teddy bear picnic in the summer term

*Reception welcome service at St Peter's Church

Physical Education (PE)

Our class will have PE on Tuesday and Friday mornings, as soon as the children are settled into school (usually we start formal PE lessons around week 4 of the Autumn term). The children are expected to have a go at getting changed themselves. It would be great if you could practise these skills at home by letting your child get dressed themselves in the morning and at bedtime into their pyjamas by themselves. Let your child practise putting on their own socks and shoes as often as possible. Please make sure all clothes and shoes in PE kits are named.

Where are we?
