Today's work is about number sequences. Have a look at the PowerPoint below. Have a go at the number sequences on the first few slides- you will recognise sequences like these and you will be used to finding the missing numbers. Stop when you get to the slide with the heading 'The nth term' and complete Task 1 (below).

If you would like more challenge, look at the rest of the slides before having a go at Task 2. These slides introduce 'the nth term'.

Here is an example of Task 2. Think about the difference between each term. Look at the first two terms. I need 4 to get from 7 to 11. So think about the first position- 1 x 4 = 4 + 3 = 7. So the rule is x 4 + 3. Let's try this for the 4th term- 4 x 4 = 16 + 3 = 19. It works! Now I can use the rule to find the 20th term in the sequence.

Position                           1                  2                3                4               5                             20

Rule                             x4 + 3         x4 + 3          x4 + 3        x4 + 3       x4 + 3                    x4 + 3

Number sequence          7                 11              15              19             23                             ?

Want even more challenge? Have a go at Task 3. It is tricky!
