Messages from Mrs Carvell & Mrs Heer to you

Added 17.07.20 at 4:45 p.m.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES FOR PARENTS:

Wednesday 2nd September

We are really pleased to announce that we are able to provide the children with a leavers’ experience on 2nd September, which is also being supported by the PTFA.

Here are the details so far:

  • This experience will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on the school field and is for children only.
  • Arrival and collection will be via the gates at the bottom of the field on Dovedale Crescent.
  • It will be held on the school field, which will be dedicated to them for the afternoon as Y6 children won’t be able to mix with any other children.
  • Lunch will be provided – menu choices will be uploaded via the class page and a form will need completing prior to this experience taking place (more details to follow).
  • Children can attend in their ‘Class of 2020’ hoodie.
  • If children would like to bring a labelled t-shirt/polo shirt for signing throughout the afternoon they are welcome to – this cannot be worn.
  • They will need to bring a camping chair or picnic blanket with them.
  • Mobile phones/cameras WILL be allowed although there will be a dedicated time for photographs to be taken.
  • The children may play rounders during the afternoon so will need to bring appropriate footwear for this and their competitive edge!
  • There will be a special treat for them as they leave at 3:00 p.m.

We also have a few additional surprises for them throughout the afternoon!

Government guidelines will be followed throughout this experience and, as a result, we will be watching this closely over the coming weeks. With this in mind, the final confirmation of this experience will be published on Friday 28th August.

We hope that weather doesn’t mean that this experience has to be cancelled and so we may be asking for gazebos to be set up if the weather isn’t what we hope for. We would appreciate any help with this, should rain be forecast, and a decision on the weather, if required, will be made on Wednesday 2nd September by 10 a.m.

Contact during the summer holidays

You can contact me or Mrs Heer via our email addresses or the contact form on the class page during the summer break. We may also use your email address to contact you with alerts and links to information. If you have any objection to this being used please let us know as soon as possible.

Please be aware that our Year 6 page will be archived on July 20th and so will not be in its usual place but can be found underneath the class pages via the archive section: class pages 2019 – 2020. We will also place a link on the new class page for you.

Thank you

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the PTFA who are working hard to support us with this experience to ensure the children have fond memories to look back on in the future.

Have a wonderful summer, and see you all very soon!

Hi everyone,

It was really lovely to see so many of you in our second set of teams meetings.

I hope you enjoyed the time as much as we did.

For those of you who didn’t join us yesterday, we thought you would want to know about the important news we shared….

As you know, we are currently following government guidance by adhering to the

2m social distancing measures in school. Unfortunately, this has meant that many of you have not been able to return as we had all hoped – which has been incredibly upsetting for you and for us.

Although new guidance has been announced recently to reduce this measure to 1m+ in the coming days, this is not yet in schools, as we wait for further information from the local authority. If the guidance

changes for us, then we hope that we will see many more of you, if not all of you, at school before we break up for the summer holiday. However, we also know that there is a possibility that this may not happen and so Mrs Heer and I have been working on a plan.

In September, the children at St John’s return on Wednesday 2nd, which is currently set as an INSET day for you at your secondary schools. We really hope that this means that you will be able to come back to school for part/all of this day to have your last day experience together as we know how

important this is for us all.

We made you a promise that, to the best of our ability, we will do everything we can to make sure we all come together again before you begin your next chapter at secondary school.

You are an amazing year 6, given everything you've been through and the challenges of the last few months, and you deserve a special time to remember in years to come.

It is REALLY important that you check the messages page regularly for more updates

over the next couple of weeks, and please remember that this could change as guidance changes.

Keep working hard on your 'special' work over the next couple of weeks as it's important.

Take care.

Dear Parents of Y6 children,

We are excited to be hosting another set of Y6 group video conversations with Mrs Carvell & Mrs Heer.

We will be hosting these conversations on Monday 29th June.  This time there will be 20 minute slots available from 14:30 to 17:00.  For safeguarding reasons, a parent must also be present for the conversation.

This time, there will be less children in each group so that we are able to see you all at the same time and the sessions will be slightly longer.  Spaces are on a first come, first served basis.

You are able to sign your child up to take part in one of these group sessions using the following link:

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=iHKvKxFqrUCL86onyr_z6zts-YOnY9dPthM6bkFAk9JUOExJWUNEWkQ4SExPUDEyQzQ5ME9KNFJJTy4u

and select your preference for when you would like to be contacted by 12:00pm on Monday 29th June.

YOU STILL NEED TO SIGN UP, EVEN IF YOU WERE PART OF THE LAST SET OF VIDEO CONVERSATIONS.

Preparation for the group video chat:

Parents:

You are able to access Microsoft Teams with an email address via a web browser, however, the app is far more efficient, and you may find it useful to download this instead.

Y6 teachers will be able to ‘invite’ you to a ‘meeting’ which you will be able to view on the ‘CALENDAR’ tab on Monday afternoon, as soon as we have arranged the call groups.

You will be able to select ‘JOIN’ to join the ‘meeting’ on the ‘CALENDAR’ tab when your group chat is about to start.

Firstly, thank you to all of those who were able to take part in our first video chats on Friday.

Hopefully, it will be the first of many and was a positive experience for you all. I have asked Mr Averis

Think about something you’d like to share with your teachers and friends: it might be something brilliant that you’ve made, an exciting lockdown story, or just generally what you’ve been up to – we can’t wait to hear from you and SEE you!

I've been keeping a little secret ....

Just before the partial closure, I found out that I was expecting a baby.  I was extremely excited and couldn't wait to share the news with you when it was safe to do so.  I knew you would all be excited to find out whether it was a boy or a girl, and that you would, of course, be able to suggest some amazing baby names.

A little while later, the government decided that it was no longer safe for pregnant women to be at work due to the threat of the Coronavirus, I began to work from home to make sure that my baby was safe.  It’s been lovely to share ‘lockdown experiences’ with some of you via email, even when I wasn’t able to tell you why I couldn’t be in school.

I understand that you'll be feeling really disappointed that you're unable to see me in school at the moment, I'm extremely upset about this too, but I'm hoping to catch up with as many of you as possible using video chat this week - look out for some important information tomorrow for how Mrs Carvell and I are arranging this.

Keep me updated via email, I do so enjoy reading your messages.  I'm looking forward to seeing you all very soon!

Love,

Mrs Heer

Well, here we are again!

After what has been an emotional time for us all, we can’t believe that we are now well into our final half term as Year 6 at St John’s school. We know that you have received your tutor group information this weekend, which we hope you are all pleased with, as we work hard to provide you with something in the way of transition from us to Year 7. It is hoped that something can be put in place, in one form or another, on the coming weeks.

We have been blown away by the work you have been sharing, the wonderful messages you have been sending and think you – and your parents - have been amazing through this whole experience which we know hasn’t been easy.

Enjoy the activities this week and…….

you instead of through emails.

We will let you know if we are able to do this, so watch this space.

SATs week is finally here but a very different experience for you this year - one you

definitely won't forget in a hurry!

A range of emotions must be in your mind: happiness, relief, disappointment or disbelief.

As we've always said, SATs doesn't measure everything you achieve and isn't what

you are in Year 6 for. One thing we can measure, and absolutely know for sure, is how

immensely proud of you we are for your hard work, enthusiasm, dedication and progress this year.

You are a totally brilliant bunch and have come so far.

Just remember, you don't need a test for everyone to know how amazing you are!

Sorry Mrs Carvell - I just had to!

Good morning children!

I'm sure that you're all suitably warmed up after your PE lesson with Joe Wicks and ready to start your day of learning, but before you do, send a HUGE 'happy birthday' message to Mrs Carvell via the 'Contact Us' page.

I know that she will be gutted that she isn't able to spend her birthday with us all together in school, so feel free to send her a message, a picture or even a video of you singing happy birthday - that will certainly make up for not being able to have the whole school sing to her in Celebration CW!

And ... don't forget to have a slice of cake (or a sweet alternative) too :)

Thank you!

Work hard and stay safe!

Love,

Mrs Heer x

Good morning,

Have you heard the news?  The Prime Minister has let us know this morning that, bizarrely, every UK household has awoken to sea creatures in their sink!

Some families in Belper awoke to crabs, tropical fish and even jellyfish in their kitchen sinks!

Living in the tropical paradise of Derbados, I woke to find an octopus in my sink, you can find a picture below.

I'm trying to figure out how it got here, as well as attempting to keep it healthy.  Does anybody know what an octopus might like to eat?

Go and check your kitchen sinks - what have you found?

Love Mrs Heer x

The octopus does feature in your writing task!

Good Morning!

So......here we are again - week 2! We've uploaded lots of activities for you for the days ahead. We hope you enjoy what we've planned for you. Practice your skills and knowledge with SATs questions (we know how much you love them!) and then enjoy a couple of art based activities. Don't forget to join Joe Wicks each morning to wake you up and there are web links for other activities/games too.

Remember to keep in touch by sending us messages using the contact forms - we really love to hear from you.

Take care,

Mrs Carvell & Mrs Heer

Hi everyone!

We know you have been working incredibly hard this week which has made us feel so proud of you. It has been brilliant reading the messages you have sent us and seeing what you've been up to with the photos you've shared - please send more. Enjoy the last day of work this week, and we hope that the sun continues to shine for you over the weekend so you can get outside in the garden (and help with the gardening ). You could help in the kitchen, by doing some cooking/baking , or have fun with some of the web links we've provided for you. Send us pictures of your weekend too - we can share your fun on the class page if you'd like.

Enjoy!

Sending love to you all.

Happy Thursday!

We have been thrilled to receive so many messages from parents and children keeping us updated about your learning at home journeys.  Please send us a message via the 'Contact Us' page to let us know that you're okay and some information about what you've been up to.

When we respond to you, you will be able to see our email address and, therefore, can reply with any photographs that you would like to send us.  We are uploading these pictures (with parental permission if children are included in the photographs) to a new folder on the class webpage for you to enjoy.  Send us pictures of: your work, extra-curricular activities (e.g. baking, sports), your new workstations, helping parents with jobs, or anything else that you can think of.  Hearing from you is the highlight of our day, and it is so lovely that we are able to keep in touch this way.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you of some messages that were given to you on Friday 20th March.  Although we find ourselves in a difficult situation, we are doing our best to recreate your usual classroom activities at home.  Remember, the expectations are high in Year 6 and we know that you are capable of rising to the challenge - you have demonstrated this all year and we are so proud of everything that you have achieved.

We have asked that you try to stay in as much of a school routine as possible, completing as much work as you can during the time of your average lessons.  This may mean that you are unable to complete all of the set activities, and that's okay, as long as you have tried your best.  It may also mean that you finish a little earlier - why not try one of the challenges, or other activities on the web page?

Either way, remember that we are here for you.  If you need any help at all, please send us a message and we will be more than happy to help.

Lots of love,

Mrs Heer & Mrs Carvell

Good morning,

A new learning adventure awaits you, and we know of no better group of children ready for the challenge.  Whether you're in school, or at home, every single one of you is capable of doing yourselves proud and owning your learning.

Remember, you're not alone - you can send us a message via the 'Contact Us' page at any time.  This can be to ask us questions about your daily activities, or just to update us about what you've been up to.  We want to hear from you!

Sending lots of love to you all,

Mrs Heer & Mrs Carvell
