Mrs Higgs' class

Here you can find details of what other children in our class (and I!) have been up to. Keep checking back to find out more!

Mrs Higgs

Friday 10th July

Hello everyone! I hope that you have been enjoying the sunshine again today. In school this week, we have been learning about how to construct a simple circuit and the symbols used to represent the components. We have also been learning one of William Shakespeare's comedy plays - A Midsummer Night's Dream. You will learn about this play next year. It is very funny! I hope that you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to your final week in Year 3. There will be some very exciting activities for you to complete next week.

Friday 3rd July

Hello! It has been rather a cooler week this week, but that hasn't stopped us here in school. We have been super busy making a band and creating our own instruments. We also used some equipment to try to make a chicken noise! It has been lovely to hear from you again this week and to see your work; what a busy bunch you are! I have heard about virtual play dates, water fights, tennis practice and trips to Carsington. At my home, Mr Higgs and I have been painting and a new carpet is being fitted today. My garden is growing well and I was able to harvest some peas for our dinner - yum! I hope that you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to hearing all about what you have been up to - especially if you have grown anything!

Friday 26th June

Last week, I began my message with 'What a wet week!', but this week I shall begin with 'What a hot week!' Wow! I hope that you have all been able to safely enjoy some sunshine, remembering your lessons about sun safety. In school, we have been learning more about sound in science; we used tuning forks to make and show sound waves and created a Bubble playlist. What have you done this week? Have you completed your tasks in the morning and laid in your paddling pool in the afternoons whilst eating an ice cream? I have enjoyed seeing your work again this week, so thank you for sending it through; I will continue to upload it above. Hope to see you soon!

Friday 19th June

What a wet week! Despite the rain, I hope that you have had a fantastic week at home and continued your learning. I have been in school with a slightly larger 'Bubble' this week. We have learnt lots about sound, played some tennis (whilst dodging the rain showers) and made string telephones. I hope that you have a good weekend and stay safe. There is one good thing about the rain this week - at least I haven't had to water my garden!

Darcey-Bella: Well done for persevering with the maths. You have completed some more brilliant work this week; your picture is above. MH

Friday 12th June

Hello! I hope that you are all keeping well. I have had another lovely week in school with my bubble. We have completed lots of maths, literacy and other lessons as well as had some fun playing tennis. I hope that you have all been working hard too and are looking forward to an exciting (although probably wet) weekend with your families. See you soon!

Thomas: Well done for persevering with your instruction writing. You have included a good variety of imperative verbs - super! Your pictures are above. MH

Daniel: I can see that you have been working really hard in maths - well done. I am really proud of your achievements! Your photograph is above. MH

Friday 5th June

Hello! I haven't forgotten about you all, I promise! It has been a very busy and enjoyable week in school setting up some bubbles that you may have heard about. This week, Mrs Ford and I had Oscar, Jessica and Huey in our bubble and they have all worked really hard on their activities. I have uploaded some more work that you have been sending me so please keep it coming and I love hearing what else you have been up to.

Stay safe!

Friday 22nd May

Firstly, a huge WELL DONE to all of you, your mummies, daddies and other adults at home; you have been amazing this half-term and worked so hard. I am the proudest teacher in Belper!

Secondly, I wish you all a lovely half-term holiday. Remember that adults at home may still need to work so think of how you can be helpful (e.g. loading plates into the dishwasher, watering the garden or reading to younger siblings).

I look forward to hearing all about what you have been up to over the holiday. You deserve it!

See you on June 1st!

Jacob: You made a lava lamp? That is very impressive! I'm glad that you have been enjoying your science experiments. MH

Monday 18th May

Welcome back! I hope that you enjoyed the sunny weekend and were able to spend some lovely time with your family. Mr Higgs and I spent some time preparing a bedroom for decorating, but we can't decide what colour(s) to paint it. What do you think? Send me your suggestions! Have you seen the daily challenge? If not, take a look at today's tasks. If you are not able to show me your creation, send me a message to let me know what you created and I will tell others about it in the 'Challenge Gallery'. Remember to check it later to see what other Y3 children have been creating. Keep smiling!

Jacob: How lovely that you were able to release your butterflies this week! Well done for caring for them so well. I'm sure they loved their orange slices and sugary water. Your photographs are above. MH

Monday 11th May

Welcome back! I hope that you had a lovely extended weekend and were able to enjoy some time with your families. We had a little party in our street to celebrate VE Day. It was a bit strange, as we all sat on our own drives; this meant that we kept a very safe distance. I spent more time in my garden but the wind was too strong yesterday, so I continued with some indoor hobbies. What did you do over the long weekend? Let me know or send me some photographs of your achievements. I look forward to hearing from you!

Darcey-Bella: Thank you, the party was fun! You have been very busy: going to the River Gardens, feeding the ducks, playing on the bandstand and a film night. Phew! I hope that your grandparents enjoy reading your leaflet about how to look after a puppy - I'm sure they will. MH
Thursday 7th May
Layla: I'm pleased to read that you have been having lots of fun! MH
Ethan: I'm so pleased to read about your perseverance - well done, I'm proud of you! Your photograph is above. MH

Jacob: Thank you, I am well and I had a lovely day in school today. Well done for your perseverance. I love that you have been keeping caterpillars and have uploaded your photograph above. It would be really lovely to see them as they get bigger. Maybe you could keep a diary about them. I hope that you have been enjoying reading to and playing with your sister as well as helping your dad to wash his lorries. MH
Leo: Well done for your writing as a 5th voice. Your photograph is above. MH
Tuesday 5th May
Darcey-Bella: Thank you, I am. How exciting that your nanny and grandad are getting a puppy called Ronnie! It's lovely that you can continue to talk with Rose and Holly - 2 hours is a long time! I'm glad that you all had fun together. I hope that you enjoyed making cherry muffins and chocolate brioche - both sound very yummy! MH

Monday 4th May

Good Morning! I hope that you are all well and have had some fun over the weekend. Can you guess where I spent lots of my time? That's correct - in my garden! I have begun to put my vegetable plants outside during the day so that they get used to being outside. They still 'sleep' indoors because the nights are just a little too chilly for them to be outside; this is called 'Hardening off'. Soon, they will be growing outside and attracting lots of bees to pollinate the garden. I have also been completing some more of my favourite craft - cross stitch. On Easter Monday, I finished cross-stitching some hares and my current project has different teapots on it; what else have you been up to? Baking? Crafting? Exercising? You can send me some details or photographs of other things that you have been completing and I will upload them to our photographs. I look forward to hearing from you!

Rose: What colourful graffiti work - well done! I like that you found your own Banksy artwork when you were in Blackpool! MH
Darcey-Bella: Well done for finding a new book - I've heard that it's funny. I'm glad that you enjoyed learning about Banksy. MH
Suri: Lovely graffiti - very colourful! Your photograph is above. MH
Friday 1st May

Otis: I'm really impressed with your perseverance - well done! What fun you have been having making pom pom animals! I have posted your photographs above. If you need anyone to complete some taste testing for you, I might know someone... MH

Holly: Very impressive artwork also! Your photograph is above. MH
Ben: Very impressive artwork! Your photograph is above. MH
Thursday 30th April

Rose: I'm glad that you are enjoying the work. What a wonderful diary entry from Albert's perspective - well done! MH

Suri: How lovely that you can talk to your friends, especially every lunchtime. I would imagine he's been bumbling around eating scrambled egg! Thank you, I hope that you have a lovely day too. MH
Darcey-Bella: Great work, and I really like that you completed the diary as a 'Hot Write'! I shall let you know when I hear anymore. I'm glad you like the name Hedgie. Where did I get it from? I made it up! It's a simple shortening of 'hedgehog'. A great score on Accelerated Reader. Maybe try another at that level. MH
Lucy: Brilliant work! I'm glad that you enjoyed writing as Albert and created a word search for French. If you would like, you could send me (or Mrs Winson-Bushby!) a photograph of it and I will share it with the rest of Y3. MH
Wednesday 29th April
Ben: Thank you, I am very well. I can understand why you might feel sorry for that character. I'm glad you enjoyed reading The Witches by Roald Dahl and that you would like some more books for your upcoming birthday. I have read some of them but not all; my favourite Roald Dahl book is The BFG. MH
Suri: Thank you for sending through your writing from today; I really enjoyed reading it! MH
Jessica: Keep up the good work with TT Rockstars! MH
Darcey-Bella: I like the sound of your dad cooking chicken in your pizza oven - yum! Well done for finding the 4 eggs; I wonder where that 5th one is hiding. I hope he feels better too. MH
Tuesday 28th April
Holly: You can absolutely try a 4.5 - well done! MH
Suri: That's a really good reason as to why Smudge is your favourite character. I wonder who everyone else chose. MH
Thomas: What a lovely park to visit! Well done for completing level 3a; I'm really pleased to hear that you enjoyed this challenge. MH

Monday 27th April

Good Morning! I hope that you have been continuing to enjoy the sunshine over the weekend and are keeping well. Unfortunately, the weather for this week is looking a little gloomier but I hope that you are all staying smiley. Receiving your messages definitely makes me smile. Last week, I spent two lovely days in school; we made and flew kites and designed some shields for St George's Day. This weekend, I have once again been busy in my garden, sowing some more seeds and preparing the bed for the vegetables - some of the seedlings are getting so big! I received a call during the week to tell me that Hedgie is very poorly but I am praying that he starts to feel better soon. I look forward to hearing from you!

PS Don't forget to tell your adults at home what a brilliant job they are doing of teaching you smiley

Holly: What a wonderful park drawing! I particularly like that you have included little details. MH
Darcey-Bella: I received your photographs. You have clearly been very busy! Your 'Mum' character from Voice in The Park made me laugh and I think Hedgie would love your poster. I have uploaded this photograph below. I wonder if anyone else has created a character? MH
Jacob: What an experiment! You placed an egg in white vinegar for 24hours, repeated this and it took the shell off the egg? The egg resembled a bouncy ball? What a chemical reaction! MH
Friday 24th April
Harry: I had a lovely Easter break, thank you. I'm really glad that you enjoyed your Easter egg hunt with your brother. You're doing a brilliant job with the reading, well done! If you would like, you could record your voice reading a little of that book and I can share it in the 'Storytime' section. Super work on TTRockstars. I have tried again to reply to your message with instructions of how to send me your photographs. MH
Thursday 23rd April
Darcey-Bella: I haven't received those photographs from your mum - can you ask her to send them again? Enjoy going to the woods and continuing to help your dad with his work; being his boss must be fun! MH
Wednesday 22nd April
Jacob: What a beautiful keep-sake that you and your family have made! It is something to treasure and will bring you many lovely memories of this time. I wonder if anyone else has made something similar. Your photograph is below. MH
Suri: Thank you, I had a lovely day in school today. We made and flew kites! I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying the work and that you like your new house. MH
Leo: What a lovely poster! You clearly traced the animals from your books with great care. Your photograph is below. MH
Darcey-Bella: I'm glad that you enjoyed today's French and I'm sure Mrs Winson-Bushby enjoyed reading your work! MH
Tuesday 21st April
Leo: Excellent work today! Remember, as the dad belongs to Smudge, we show this using an apostrophe: Smudge's dad. Your photograph is below. MH
Darcey-Bella: Enjoy your walk out with your dad. I hope that he doesn't fall in the stream again! If you are looking for different trees, you could collect a leaf from each (from the ground, not pulled off) and see how many different leaves you can collect then send in a photograph of them to share. Your photographs are below. That slime looks disgusting! MH
Jacob: A good guess, but it's not the correct answer. MH
Thomas: Brilliant angle finding! If an angle is larger than 180 degrees, we call this a reflex angle (you can see one on your clock). Your photographs are below. MH

Monday 20th April

Welcome back! I hope that you have all had a lovely Easter holiday. Mine was very busy. I have planted lots of seeds in pots ready to go in the garden at a later date, painted our garden fence to protect it and read lots of my book (whilst drinking cups of tea). I can't believe how fast my seeds have grown! Last week, I found a hedgehog in our garden in the morning. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means that they only come out at night, so finding one during the day was a bit strange. I carefully scooped it up and put it in a box with a hot water bottle, some water and scrambled egg (made with water rather than milk), which he ate very quickly - who knew that hedgehogs loved scrambled egg! If you have time, maybe you could do your own research about hedgehogs, make a poster about them or make Hedgie (I decided to call him this!) a Get Well card and send me a photograph of it. Mr Higgs and I took it to a local rescue centre so I will keep you updated.

Jacob: You have been busy! I look forward to seeing your TV advert. It's great to hear that you have been helping your step dad by completing lots of chores; a brilliant way to earn pocket money. I wonder how the Easter bunny managed to carry that many eggs to your house! I think you need to continue with that walking and cycling after all of that chocolate! I'm glad that you've been enjoying some more times tables challenges and making your lego set. MH
Zack: A good guess, but that's not the correct answer. MH
Verity: I love that you have been playing lots of darts with your dad and even more so that you scored 180 (and made your dad jealous!). You're absolutely right - darts is great for your maths. I wonder if anyone else has been playing or practising their maths in a different way. MH
Darcey-Bella: I had a lovely Easter, thank you. I did receive a Maltesers bunny! I'm glad that you like them too. It sounds like you've had a really fun time watching all of those films, especially the new Trolls film. I have heard a lot about this new Slime book. If you want to, you could record your own voice reading some of the book, send it to me and I can upload it to the Storytime section - that way, you can share the book with us all. Great work today! I have added your photographs below. I am sure that your friends are all missing you too. Today, I will be starting to write some of your reports...Keep smiling! MH
Easter holiday messages
Harry: I have tried to reply to your message but I think the e-mail address is incorrect. Please send another message. MH
Otis: Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately, I cannot change the score. If you let me know which book it was, and any information about the question if you can, I can let Mrs Astell know or you could contact AR yourself with the details. I'm glad that you're enjoying the activities. MH
Friday 3rd April
Crime stoppers: Well done to all of these crime stoppers who solved the clues in maths and found the culprit who was...Doris Clubb! Or, as Ben called her, Naughty Doris! MH

Holly: I have replied to your questions in the 'Messages' section. MH
Darcey-Bella: You have been busy! Your photographs are below. Well done for completing today's maths. I think it's brilliant that you painted your dad's face - I'm not sure I know what a butterfly tiger looks like! A mud kitchen sounds exciting and very messy! Wednesday 1st April
Zack: That's correct, well done! MH

Faye: Lovely to hear from you. I do have the book at home with me, so I may well record that too! MH

Monday 30th March

Good Morning! I hope that you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed some of the sunshine. I hung some washing outside on Saturday and the wind was blowing it all around - I was afraid some of it might blow off and I would have to chase it around the garden; thankfully, it didn't! I look forward to reading your messages this week and finding out what you have been up to as well as reading some more stories and poems for you to listen to. If you haven't heard these already, check out the 'Storytime' section on the 'Home Learning' screen. Speak to you soon! MH

Ben: Well done for completing the work today. You will find the answer to today's clue in tomorrow's work. I'm please you enjoyed watching Hook and the game you're playing. I don't have an Alexa but I think it's a game that everyone could play, so for everyone else:

Try to name as many things as you can that begin with each letter of Harry Potter. Or choose a different theme if you don't know Harry Potter very well. Hmmm...let me see: M - malty, A - amazing, L - little, T - tasty...can you guess what my theme is?! MH

Darcey-Bella: Thank you, I had a lovely time for my birthday. No, I didn't receive any Maltesers; that's probably a good thing, as I gave up chocolate for Lent (less than 2 weeks to go, not that I'm counting!). I'm glad that you enjoyed your walk with your dog. Well done for completing the maths but I shall not give away the answer to the first clue until tomorrow! I love that you are completing the Joe Wicks videos as a family; that makes it much more special. Enjoy the garden! MH
Suri: Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about your ankle. I'll have some colourful pens out ready for us all to sign your cast! I hope that today's maths game helps to keep you entertained! MH

Friday 27th March

Thank you for your birthday messages! I'm very sad not to be able to see you all today on my birthday, but I will spend some time enjoying this beautiful sunshine! Have a lovely weekend and keep those messages coming! MH

Thomas: A good idea, but it's not the correct answer this time. MH
Darcey-Bella: Brilliant work on Mastery level and I'm glad that you enjoyed it! MH
Harry: Thank you, I am well and I hope that you are too. You have been keeping busy! Brilliant work on TTRockstars - well done - and 5 miles is a lot of walking in one day! Try using the ARBookfind (I have given details of how to find specific books for your level in the 'Messages' section of Home Learning). If you still have difficulty, let me know and I'll see what I can find for you. I really enjoyed reading your paragraph from yesterday, so thank you for sending that through. Ben: How exciting that you have your own path into the garden! Well done for completing both sheets. I hope you're enjoying the book. I love crumpets too! MH
Holly: I'm glad that you've enjoyed the stories. I have located a Mog book as you requested so I shall record and upload that later. (To everyone else: you can hear the stories and poems in the 'Storytime' section on the Home Learning page. Any requests, let me know!) MH
Faye: Well done! You could try a 3.7 and see how you get on. MH

Holly: How exciting! I love birds, so I'm really pleased to read that you saw two goldfinches in your garden. I'm sure they appreciated the material you put out for them to help them to build their nest. You'll have to keep looking out for the nest and maybe some Easter chicks! MH
Darcey-Bella: Congratulations on completing the Mastery maths - I'm so proud of you! I'm glad to hear you also enjoyed the Joe Wicks workout - what an active bunch you are! Enjoy reading Harry Potter. I will miss you all too, but we will be back in class very soon! MH
Zack: It's great to hear that you completed the Joe Wicks workout this morning - well done! Good luck with the maths! MH
Henry: I had a lovely weekend, thank you. I planted some pea seeds so hopefully I will be able to eat some peas in a couple of months. MH
Daniel: I hope you enjoyed your time at the park. MH
