Starting at St John's & School Uniform

School Uniform

At St John's, we believe that our school uniform helps children feel part of the school community and promotes a sense of pride and belonging. We are committed to ensuring that our uniform is affordable, practical and accessible for all families.

Our uniform consists of:

  • Grey or black skirt, trousers or shorts
  • White polo shirt, blouse or shirt
  • Bottle-green jumper or cardigan
  • Dark brown or black footwear without bright colours, logos or stripes
  • In summer, green and white gingham or striped dresses may be worn

PE Kit (Indoor)

  • White T-shirt or polo shirt
  • Black or dark shorts
  • Dark pumps and socks for children in Year 2 and above

PE Kit (Outdoor)

  • Trainers that children can fasten independently
  • White T-shirt or polo shirt
  • Black or dark shorts
  • Dark tracksuit bottoms, leggings or a warm jumper during colder weather
  • A warm hat in winter and a sun hat in summer

To help keep costs as low as possible, most items can be purchased from a wide range of retailers. Many children wear clothing in the correct school colours without the St John's logo, and this is fully acceptable. Families are welcome to buy non-branded uniform from any retailer of their choice.

For families who would like a branded uniform, embroidered items featuring the St John's logo are available from Loopwear, a local supplier with a showroom in Ilkeston where families can try on clothing before purchasing.

We are proud to support local businesses wherever possible and have chosen to work with a local supplier rather than a national uniform provider. This approach allows families the freedom to choose where they purchase most uniform items while ensuring that branded options remain available for those who would like them.

We encourage the reuse and recycling of good-quality uniform wherever possible and are committed to ensuring that uniform costs do not become a barrier to children fully participating in school life.

Our PTFA also offers a selection of pre-loved uniforms, kindly donated by families within our school community. For more information, or to get in touch with the PTFA, please visit their page on our school website. CLICK HERE.

No makeup, including nail varnish, or jewellery, other than stud earrings and religious bangles are to be worn.

If your child has their ears pierced, or you are considering having them pierced our PE policy has information about earrings and PE lessons. CLICK HERE.

We encourage parents that want to have their child's ears pierced to do so at the beginning of the summer holidays so that children can learn how to manage their earrings safely with parents for 6 weeks before having to take them out at school.  Any inappropriate jewellery will be taken off a child and the child will be told that the parent needs to come and collect it from the teacher.

Children are allowed and encouraged to wear watches or fit bits, but are not allowed to bring phones or wear any smartwatches or jewellery that is able to record or transmit pictures, videos, text or sound. We have published extra information in our paperwork section to help parents with this.
