New Reception Starters 2024-2025

A welcome message from our EYFS lead, Mrs Richardson

Thank you for choosing St John's C of E Primary and Nursery for your child's primary school education. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our wonderful school. This page is dedicated especially to all the families that will be joining us, we can't wait to meet you in the new term but for now we would love it if you had a look at the information we have included on this page.

This information should give you an overview of what life in Reception is like at St John's. We follow the EYFS curriculum and we learn through a wide range of play based, active learning opportunities in our indoor and outdoor classrooms.

We are busy preparing for the parents meeting on Thursday 20th June at 6pm and we are looking forward to meeting you all. We will be sharing lots of information, as well as it being an opportunity for you as parents to meet your child's class teacher, look around the Reception area and ask any questions you might have. You will also receive an induction pack, after the meeting we will be adding all the documents on to this page.

Please feel confident that we are always happy to talk to you about anything regarding your child. We are a caring and friendly school, very much at the heart of the community.

We hope that you find the information on this page helpful and we are very much looking forward to meeting you all soon.

Best wishes

Mrs Richardson and the Early Years Team.

We are really excited as this year as you will be part of our mouse club!

It is really important that you come to your transition visit as you will be collecting a very special little friend who will help you settle into school.

Make sure you also look out for your special invitation to join mouse club that will be coming home soon!

You will have received a letter stating when your child will be visiting their new classroom, meeting their teacher and new friends.  The dates are:

Tuesday 25th June 9.15am-11.30am or Wednesday 26th June 9.15am-11.30am

Please return the 'All about me' booklet on this day so that we can start getting to know your child and it will help us to prepare for September.

The Derbyshire Early Years Strategic group recently commissioned a survey focusing on 'School Readiness'. They sought views from both parents and early years professionals. Results were analysed and clear priorities emerged. These were called the '10 keys to unlocking school readiness'.

Whilst this list is not exhaustive and children develop different skills at different times, we hope it identifies how you can help your child be ready for starting school.

Getting Ready for School

We hope you find these links useful to provide some information and activities for things you could do at home to help your child get ready for school in September.

Books to help children get ready for school

There are lots of story books that can help your child think about starting school. It can be an anxious time for you both so sharing a story together at bed time is a great starting point for these conversations.

Llama Llama Misses Mama, read by author Anna Dewdney

Strange new teacher. Strange new toys. Lots of kids and lots of noise! What would Llama like to do? Llama Llama feels so new . . .It's Llama Llama's first day of school.

In Reception, we use the Tapestry learning journal app to record evidence of 'Wow!' moments for each child. We are able to share this with you as parents and carers, which provides a great home - school link and enables teachers and parents to be part of their learning adventure. You will receive your login details for Tapestry within the first 2 weeks of your child being in school.
