  • Return to school March 8th

    Tue 23 Feb 2021

I am very pleased to be writing about the return to school for all pupils. I am looking forward to Monday March 8th when all of our children can return to school and join the 50% of our children that are attending every day at present.

After the announcement from the Prime Minister last night the Department for Education published guidelines for schools to read to help us plan for the safe return of all pupils. These guidelines are available for everyone to read. CLICK HERE.

Having looked at them this morning it is clear that St. John’s will look and operate in a very similar way to how we worked during the autumn term in 2020. For example, we’ll still have staggered start and end times and children will spend the day in their year group bubbles. It will also be important for us to continue with our hand hygiene procedures and that we follow guidelines on isolating and testing when displaying symptoms.

There are a few minor differences that I will clear up in the next week, but I am pleased to share that home schooling parents at home can begin to prepare to return children to school on March 8th. I’ll see you all then.

  • IMPORTANT: Internet Safety

Tue 09 Feb 2021 Mrs Carvell

IMPORTANT: Keeping your child safe online - session for parents

It’s not too late to sign up for the free parent internet safety education session with Traci Good. If you missed the Monday session sign up for Thursday 11th February at 6p.m. from the comfort of your home using Zoom. It is approximately 1 hour and is vitally important to support you to keep your child safe online!

Link to sign up: CLICK HERE

We are particularly pleased to have been able to arrange for Traci Good, a highly respected online safety consultant, recognised by Derbyshire Safeguarding board, to lead the session. Traci is a CEOP Ambassador and an Assessor and Consultant for the South West Grid for Learning and also provides strategic support for British Schools abroad.

The session overview is for parents and carers to be aware of the risks they face so they know what to look out for and feel equipped enough to support children if they need it. This is also an opportunity to get some expect guidance and ask advice of a trained safety consultant.

During this session Traci will cover:

    • What are our children doing online – how do we mitigate risk?
    • How can we support our children to be good digital citizens?
    • Where to go for good quality advice and support
    • Being a good role model, positive parental Internet use.
    • Social media and school, where are our boundaries?

The session is both informative and engaging and is particularly important during these challenging times when we are all using technology much more regularly. Often, our older children are using technology unsupervised so it’s vitally important that you have the confidence and the tools to keep them safe online.

So, sign up now for the session on Thursday 11th February and a link to the session will be sent to you via email on the day of the event.

These workshops will be a great opportunity for parents to pick up advice on how to keep their children safe online.

  • Attendance at school

    Fri 05 Feb 2021

Attendance of children during partial closure

Week beginning Monday 8th February, sees our highest number of key worker parents request places at St. John's for their children.

    This week we have had

    • a senior member of staff from the local authority ask why we have well over 45% of our children attending school when the county average is about 20%
    • a number of families let us know that they are upset that other families are sending children to school when adults and child care are available at these houses.

The government have given schools the option of asking for proof of key worker roles before admitting children to school. Up to now at St. John's we have hoped that community spirit and support would mean that key worker parents "would keep their children at home if they can" as per government guidance. We hope that this message and reminder further emphasise this point.

If you are are key worker and are able to keep your child at home the government guidance is clear, you should be doing so.

On behalf of the community, children and staff of St. John's

    Thank you for doing so.

  • Confirmed COVID case in year 2.

    Wed 03 Feb 2021

    Updated Wednesday 3rd February - 3pm

Unfortunately we have been notified today that a child in year two has tested positive for COVID19. I am sure you join us in wishing the child and their family well during this time.

All children in year two that attended school on Monday 1st February need to isolate in accordance with government guidance. Children in year two are bringing home a letter today with information to help their parents. This letter can also be found online. CLICK HERE. This isolation period finishes at 23:59 hours on Thursday 11th February.

To help ensure our year two children leave school safely tonight (Monday 3rd) and follow isolation guidelines, please can parents collect them from the school hall and not off the playground.

Teachers in year two will continue to provide online learning for all children at home during this period of time.

  • Learning at home books

    Mon 01 Feb 2021

Some parents have let us know that children will soon have filled their learning at home exercise books. Parents and adults of children learning at home are invited to school to come and collect new books on Thursday 11th February between 4pm and 5pm.

Books can be collected from the school hall. There will be a socially distanced one way system for people coming to collect new books.
