Admissions to the nursery

Children are able to join our nursery in the September, January or April after their third birthday. All information about out nursery and how to apply for a place can be found on the nursery section of this web site. CLICK HERE. Applications to join the nursery are made to the school and not the Local Authority.

Children are able to attend the nursery for 15 hours a week.

Admissions for Reception in September 2020

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our school in September 2020. Children start primary school in the reception class in the September after their fourth birthday. Therefore, if your child was born between September 1st 2015 and August 31st 2016 they will be able to start primary school in September 2020 in one of our three reception classes. Applications open at 9am on Monday 11th November 2019 and parents have three months to apply as you need to have applied for your place by 15th January 2020. Applications for reception places at St. John's need to be made to the local authority, CLICK HERE


Your children will be the first children to start St. John's in our brand new reception classes that are due for completion in January 2020. These classes have been designed and built with reception children in mind and will provide an excellent and exciting start to school for children that will be working with us for the next seven years. 


If you are considering joining our school in September 2020 you and your child are invited to come on a tour of the school to meet us all. On the dates below you are invited to school at 1.30pm for a half hour tour of the school with Mr. Averis and Mrs. Carvell, our headteacher and deputy headteacher. During the tour you will be able to go into all of the classrooms, meet children and teachers and see our school in action. After the tour at 2pm you and your child will be invited to ‘meet the reception teachers’ and spend an hour with us playing and getting to know the team. We will have activities for your children to do and refreshments for you and your child whilst you speak to our reception teachers about your child’s first year at St. John’s.


The tours and meet the teacher afternoons are on Mondays

If you are unable to make a Monday afternoon tour and meet the teacher we are also able to take parents and their children on a tour of the school on the following dates, where parents will be able to see the new reception classes. These tours will take about 45 minutes.

  • Friday 10th January 2020 9.30am

We look forward to welcoming new parents who will be starting in September 2020 to our Introduction to St. John's evening at 6pm on Thursday June 25th 2020 when you will be able to see our brand new reception classroom opening in January 2020. At this meeting we will be giving out information about your child's class teacher and transition from nursery and how we will help your child begin and get settled at their new school. 


We will be able to accept 80 children in September 2020. Children are admitted according to the following criteria, in order -

· Children who are in care of, or accommodated by, Derbyshire County Council or another LA.

· Children living in the normal area served by the school, and have siblings at the school at the time of admission. Use this map on the Derbyshire website to help see what school you live in the normal area of. (please read the guide on how to use it first) or type your postcode in here.

· Children living in the normal area served by the school

· Children who do not live in the normal area, but have siblings at the school at the time of admission

· Other children whose parents/carers have requested a place by the published date

· Children whose parent/carers did not express their preference by the published date




Other admissions to any other year group or at any other time of the school year


If you have a child that wants to join our school at any other time other than the start of reception you need to ring us first to see if we have any spaces in the year group you child will attend.
