Curriculum Overview

In the Early Years, science is taught through the Knowledge and Understanding of the World area of learning. Children explore scientific ideas in a very practical, hands‑on way. Rather than formal lessons, they learn through play, investigation, and talking about what they notice.

We encourage children to:

  • Explore and ask questions – noticing what happens when they mix, build, pour, grow, or test things.
  • Make simple predictions – “What do you think will happen if…?”
  • Observe changes – such as ice melting, seeds growing, shadows changing, or objects sinking and floating.
  • Use simple scientific language – words like “hot/cold”, “heavy/light”, “rough/smooth”, “grow”, “change”, and “predict”.
  • Develop curiosity – by investigating the natural world, animals, weather, materials, and technology.

Our aim is to build children’s natural curiosity and help them make sense of the world around them. This hands-on approach lays strong foundations for more formal science learning as they move through school.
