Hola Mexico – ‘Dia de los Muertos
Dear Parents/Carers,
Next week, as part of our Hola Mexico project, we will be exploring the Mexican holiday ‘Dia de los Muertos’ (loosely translated as ‘Day of the Dead’).
This Mexican celebration involves family and friends gathering to pray and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping support their spiritual journey. Mexicans view it not as a day of sadness, but as a day of celebration of their loved ones’ lives.
You may already be familiar with this holiday through its portrayal in popular culture, notably featured in ‘James Bond – Spectre’ and for being the inspiration of Disney’s ‘Coco’ storyline.
At St. John’s, we are committed to exploring other cultures through our diverse and fortifying curriculum. Children will learn about ‘Dia de los Muertos’ in a factual manner and will be asked to complete various activities with it as the stimulus, including a reading comprehension and writing their own non-chronological report.
If you have any queries about the week’s activities, please do not hesitate to ask.
