At our school, we teach handwriting in a clear, structured way to help children develop confidence, fluency and pride in their presentation.
In the Early Years, children learn to form letters using rhymes and mnemonics from the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) phonics programme. These help children to remember correct letter formation in a fun and engaging way.
In Year 1, children begin to learn continuous cursive handwriting, supporting smoother and more efficient handwriting.
When children are ready, they are introduced to joining letters, helping them to write more fluently.
In Key Stage 2, handwriting is refined through regular teaching and practice. Children are supported to maintain correct letter formation and joins, write neatly and consistently and increase their writing speed while maintaining accuracy.
We encourage high standards of presentation across all subjects. Children are motivated to take pride in their handwriting through our pen licence system, which recognises when they are consistently meeting expectations.
Our aim is for all children to develop a fluent, legible and efficient handwriting style that supports them in all areas of their learning.
