Reception – Curious About Creatures Underground 🦔🕳️

In Reception, the children explored science through the story 'The Mole Who Knew It Was None of His Business', which sparked lots of curiosity, laughter and thoughtful questions. The story led the children to investigate “Whose poo is it?” as they learned to classify animals as carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, linking diet to what animals leave behind.

The children also explored how moles live underground, questioning how moles see in the dark and how light helps us to see. Through practical activities, discussion and observation, they investigated the importance of light and how it affects visibility.

Taking their learning further, the children became tunnel engineers, designing and building their own mole tunnels to explore how moles move and live beneath the ground. During Forest School, they hunted for worms — a mole’s favourite food — deepening their understanding of habitats and food sources through hands‑on exploration.

These activities encouraged the children to ask questions, make observations and test ideas, showing that science begins with curiosity and careful thinking. The combination of story, investigation and outdoor learning helped the children develop early scientific skills in a meaningful and memorable way.
