Year 3/4 – Magical Science and Curious Investigations 🧙‍♂️⚡🏏

In Year 3/4, the children’s scientific learning was inspired by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which captured their imaginations and encouraged them to explore science through a magical lens. The story provided an exciting context for investigating forces, materials and properties.

The children became potion‑makers, experimenting with mixtures and observing changes as they created their own potions. They also explored magnetic forces, designing and testing charms using different materials to discover which could block magnetic attraction and which could not.

As part of their learning about forces and gravity, the children took part in a Quidditch‑themed investigation, testing which objects would hit the ground first. This helped them explore ideas about weight, air resistance and falling objects, making predictions and explaining their findings.

Through hands‑on experiments, discussion and teamwork, the children developed key scientific skills such as planning investigations, testing ideas, observing carefully and drawing conclusions. Using a familiar and much‑loved story helped bring science to life and showed that curiosity, creativity and careful thinking are at the heart of scientific discovery
