Year 6 – Adapting, Surviving and Understanding Change 🌍🔌🧊

In Year 6, scientific learning was inspired by the picture book Island: A Story of the Galápagos, which encouraged the children to think deeply about adaptation, survival and change over time. The story provided a powerful context for exploring how living things depend on their environments.

The children investigated the concept of survival of the fittest, learning how animals and plants adapt to their surroundings in order to survive. They explored physical and behavioural adaptations, making links between environmental conditions and the features organisms need to thrive.

As part of their physics learning, the children explored electrical circuits, building and testing components to understand how electricity flows and how circuits can be controlled. This practical work encouraged careful planning, accurate construction and problem‑solving.

The children also investigated melting icebergs, observing what happens over time and thinking about the impact of rising temperatures on polar environments and global sea levels. Through discussion and observation, they explored cause and effect and reflected on how gradual changes can have long‑term consequences.

Through thoughtful investigation, discussion and practical exploration, the children developed key scientific skills including analysing evidence, observing changes over time, drawing conclusions and making connections between different areas of science. Using an inspiring story helped bring complex scientific ideas to life and encouraged curiosity about our changing world.
